Close cooperation in the field of road automation has been announced at the first international conference: "Autonomous Future of Road Transport" organized by the Motor Transport Institute. More than four hundred representatives of the automotive industry, the business world and academics attended the meeting. Among them there were guests from
"These were primarily representatives of companies that provide components to automotive manufacturers round the world, so I think there will be a lot of interesting material (from the conference)", said the director of the Motor Transport Institute prof. Marcin Ślęzak.
Participants of the conference are discussing primarily the future of transport and possibilities for its gradual autonomy. "We will talk about all issues related to autonomous transport means, that is, the issues related to declaring them road worthy, cyber security, ethics, or technology," stressed prof. Marcin Ślęzak.
The conference participants also have the opportunity to check out the innovative and already available technology in the real traffic. For the needs of the conference, a test road section was set up in
A dedicated poster session has been prepared for young researchers, which presents the effects of their research and development on the rapidly developing technologies used in road transport.
The heads of the infrastructure and construction ministries: Andrzej Adamczyk and Krzysztof Tchórzewski agreed that the implementation of new technologies in the field of automation of road transport is a horizontal issue, covering many areas of the economy. In order to coordinate actions in this respect, they see the need to establish a
MTI’s Director prof. Marcin Ślęzak recalled that such actions are part of the Strategy for Responsible Development adopted by the government on 14 February 2017 and the Electromobility Development Plan in Poland: "Energy for the Future" adopted by the government on 16 March 2017.
Autonomous vehicles on the Polish roads in a matter of few years
If the plans announced for the conference are successful, the first autonomous vehicles will have the chance to appear on Polish roads in a few years time.
"First, they will appear in closed areas, that is, they will be tested under special supervision, while fully commercial use of them, I assume will be around 2025, because then there will exist all the guidelines and I think all the problems that may arise, related to the ethics, road safety, or other elements, will by then be sloved" said MTI Director, prof. Marcin Ślęzak.
The role of Motor Transport Institute

He added that the Institute will also set up a National Contact Point for the vehicles and components manufacturers, technology companies, local governments, scientific institutions and other organizations interested in the development and implementation of CAD (connected and automated driving systems). Prof. Ślęzak assured that the Institute headed by him "will also provide expert and substantive support to the partners".
